According to Miriam Levitt, the Medical Director for the Bronxville School District, they have received a report of a mumps infection in an elementary school staff member who was assigned to the first grade.
In a notice that was spread to parents late on Wednesday afternoon, Levitt warned that mumps is “a viral disease that is highly contagious,” so notice was sent to the entire district. It is believed that the staff member may have been infectious for the past three weeks since schools re-opened following Winter Break.
Levitt noted that the only prevention against mumps is immunization, and all students in Bronxville are required to have two vaccinations before the school year, which provides a protection rate of approximately 88 percent.

“If your student develops an illness with fever, malaise and facial swelling or swollen neck glands, have a physician evaluation and inform the doctor of the mumps possibility,” she added. “Any occurrence (should be) reported to the Health Office.”
