BRONXVILLE, N.Y. Bronxville is among the most generous communities in the country in terms of percentage of income donated to charity, according to a recent report by The Chronicle of Philanthropy.
Bronxville residents gave $48.3 million to charities in the most recent year the Chronicle tracked, which ranked the village 236th out of the 28,725 ZIP codes in the United States.
The median amount that Bronxville residents contributed was $2,989, which represented about 6.1 percent of their income. The national median is 4.7 of income donated to charity.
Westchester County ranked among the most charitable counties in the country, at 12th among the 3,115 counties nationwide. According to the Chronicle study, Westchester County donated $1.2 billion. That's an average of 4.6 percent of residents' disposable income a median contribution of $2,796 per person.
New York as a whole was second on the list of states in terms of total donations, with $11.3 billion in charitable contributions.
In terms of percentage of income given, New York ranks 18th in the nation, with a residents donating a median 4.7 percent of their disposable income to charities or nonprofits.
In comparison, Utah ranked No. 1, with residents giving 10.6 percent of their disposable income. But if religious contributions are subtracted, New York rises to second in the nation.
The study also found that wealthy states and residents aren't the most generous. Households earning $50,000 to $75,000 donate an average of 7.6 percent, compared with the 4.2 percent by homes that bring in $100,000 or more.
To do the study, The Chronicle of Philanthropy examined data by ZIP code and income level in every municipality in the United States. The study is based on exact dollar amounts released by the Internal Revenue Service for 2008 showing the value of charitable deductions claimed by American taxpayers.
