A translator is not needed to view the Tuckahoe-based exhibit that showcases Italian-themed art created by children. "I like the idea of kids being involved in art," said instructor and Mt Kisco-based artist Joseph Genova. "I am not a teacher, but I tried to inspire the kids, and it was a very inspiring experience for me." said Genova.
Genova, grandfather of three, spent three Saturdays in March and April coaching about 20 children between the ages of 6 and 13 on the finer points of fine art. "I never told them exactly what to do or how to do it, but I would point things out to them such as a painting an open door, showing a person in the background," Genova said. " I would ask them, why do you think the artist painted it that way?"
The results are currently on display at the Westchester Italian Cultural Center, located on Generoso Pope Place in Tuckahoe, where the classes were held.
Cultural Center Executive Director Maria Mascioti gave Genova high marks. "I went to one of the classes and the kids were having a great time," Mascioti said.
Mascioti said the idea came from Genova's exhibit of his own paintings which opened in early March.
Genova asked that children be invited to the opening. He also lectured at the Cultural Center on his own approach to painting and what inspires him. "The idea grew from there. Why not have a workshop for children," Genova said.
Genova,was in the advertising business for most of his professional life. "I was a weekend painter," he said. But 10 years ago, he began to spend less time working on advertising and more time painting. Since then, the Italian native, who came to the U.S. when he was nine, has had exhibitions throughout the country. He has participated in shows throughout California, and also at the Horizon Gallery in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Closer to home, Genova's work has been on display at the Cavalier Gallery in Greenwich, CT and the Hammond Museum in North Salem.
Although the exhibit of Genova's work has been concluded, the works of the children will continue to be on display at the cultural center through July 21.
