SCARSDALE, N.Y. The Westchester Reform Temple (WRT) has launched a membership program targeted toward families with children ages birth through second grade.
The Families with Young Children Membership Initiative is designed to help young families from around the region find a supportive community, according to WRT's Early Childhood Center Director Sue Tolchin.
The program is part of a nationwide movement backed by the Union for Reform Judaism, Tolchin said. "There's a growing trend in the U.S. of placing value on young families, making them feel part of the community. The buzz, the talk is toward engagement. All the synagogues are doing this."
The Families with Young Children Membership Initiative includes membership to WRT as part of Early Childhood Center tuition.
"This is something that families were asking for," Tolchin said. "We are pleased to be able to offer it as part of the 2012-2013 school year."
For families with their oldest child younger than third grade, regardless of enrollment at the ECC, WRT membership is reduced to 50 percent of the standard family rate. For all families, this program also includes a reduced commitment for the temple building fund.
"People are moving up scared from the city," Tolchin said. "They are not finding a community, a place to belong. Westchester Reform Temple is a fun, safe place that can help people with that transition, help them make connections."
