With the flu having spread at an unprecedented rate nationally last year, Erik Larsen, the Associate Director of the Emergency Department at White Plains Hospital, is warning that this flu season may be just as rough.
“Last year’s flu season was fairly significant, and this year, we’re expecting to see about the same level of activity,” he said. “Flu can be a life-threatening illness and results in hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and thousands of death each year. Never hesitate to seek medical help if you think you need it.”
The Centers for Disease Control’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), recommends that everyone older than 6 months should receive a flu vaccination annually.
Those suffering from the flu will endure symptoms that include high fevers, coughing, sore throats, stuffed or runny noses, body aches, headaches and extreme fatigue. Flu season traditionally extends into the early spring. Healthcare practitioners advise those looking to get vaccinated to do so early.
