“Our medical board wanted to do something meaningful that could help students figure out if medicine is what they would study in college,” said Dr. Susan Campanile, internal medicine physician at NYP/Lawrence Hospital.
Campanile was among physicians, surgeons, pharmacists, therapists and other health workers who helped students learn more about careers in the health-care profession.
Students watched a video of surgeries and learned how to take vital signs and performed CPR and intubation on mannequins.
About 40 parents also attended the event.
“The students were really engaged, and asked lots of good questions,” said Mark Apfelbaum, director of the NewYork-Presbyterian Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at NYP/Lawrence.
Bronxville High School senior Jeanne Chrisanthopoulos said that getting to experience the different medical fields and opportunities at the event helped steer her in the right direction.
“I went to a cancer research lab, but the hands-on experience with surgery is more interesting than research,” she said. “This validated that for me.”
