The Park Place shop's third annual Holiday Food Drive will run until Saturday, Dec 22.

"Our company prides itself on giving back to the community," said manager Nelly Yagual. "We want to become the place that residents know they can donate food to. Last year, we collected over 250 cans, and we hope that number grows because it's needed even more now. All the people that were hurt by the recent hurricane just makes our efforts that much more important."

Many families would go hungry without the help of small businesses like Weezie D., said Linda Kersey, the coalition's associate director.

"I don't even know where to begin in terms of the value of such organizations," said Kersey. "The regular need for food has been great, but with Sandy wreaking havoc on so many families it’s especially great right now. Our success is due to a slew of individuals that have stepped up and made special efforts to fight hunger. Without such efforts so many people would go hungry."

Bronxville resident Karen Ryloa said giving to the less fortunate is the right thing to do.

"Lots of churches around here are always organizing food collections," said Ryloa. "It's something that people with the ability to should feel responsible to do. Look at what happened to people in Breezy Point and so many other places after Sandy. This is an opportunity to give back and help everyone have a good holiday."

Weezie D. is asking for the following items: tuna fish, soups, vegetables (canned or dried), fruits (canned or dried), pastas and sauces, rice, beans, peanut butter, jelly, crackers, cereal, dry or evaporated milk, juices, coffee and tea.
