EASTCHESTER, N.Y. It was all work for highway and public works departments and all play for children throughout Westchester County during the first official snowfall of 2012.
Acting as an official taste tester, Anna Ruiz, 5, of Bronxville took a break from sledding to let the snow fall on her tongue.
"It tastes good," Ruiz reported. "I love it.
Alden Martinelli acted as the official snow-angel tester, and reported the snow was perfect for making a snow angel.
"I am happy," said Martinelli said, also of Bronxville. "I have to go back on my sled now."
According to the National Weather service, southern Westchester residents can expect snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches and residents in northern Westchester can expect 3 to 5 inches. Snow is expected to stop by early evening and termperatures will drop into the teens. Sunday is expected to be mostly sunny with temperatures in the low 30s.
But none of the weather predictions or the slippery and slushy roads had any DPW workers in Eastchester, Tuckahoe or Bronxville worried in the least.
Crews have been out in Bronxville since 4:00 a.m. and report that every road in the village has been plowed and salted at least once and will be again.
Tuckahoe DPW head Frank DeMarco said that in addition to plowing and spreading brine, so that snow does not stick to the roads, he has crews out shoveling and sanding the sidewalks in Tuckahoe.
But Eastchester Highway Department foreman Tom Lillo said his department will stay on the job until all of the roads are clear.
"We are ready," Lillo said. "We're going to make sure we see blacktop before we leave for the day."
