Officials Question Cashless Tolls As NY State Thruway Losses Mount

The New York State Thruway's toll system at Exit 17 in Newburgh made the list of problem areas in the agency's increase in uncollected tolls over the last five years, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal.

The problem is leading some officials to question the move to a cashless system that some fear with bring about even more loss to the 570-mile thruway system. Just from 2013-14, loss reported was $2.5 million for the agency as it struggled to pay for the new Tappan Zee Bridge, the Poughkeepsie Journal says.

The Poughkeepsie Journal, which analyzed documents from the Thruway Authority, noted one of the biggest problem areas was the Tappan Zee, which moved to a cashless system in April. At the Newburgh exit, $668,244.35 in uncollected tolls were racked up from 2010-14, the Poughkeepsie Journal reports.
