Zimmermans Jump Together for State Track Meet

Harry Zimmerman walked from the high jump pit at White Plains High School, where he had just qualified as the Section 1 representative to the New York State Public High Schools track meet, over to the long jump area where his sister, Madeline, was competing in the triple jump.

“I just try to help her stay focused and give her some encouragement,” the junior Briarcliff High long jumper said. “I don’t know much about the technique of the triple, but we always try to help each other with our events. She’s doing well so far.”

Zimmerman, who jumped six feet to qualify for the state meet and has jumped a personal best of 6-2 this season, said he has developed a lot since last year under new coaching and with better technique. The state meet will take place June 10 and 11 at Caledonia-Mumford High School in upstate New York.

“It’s about timing and being consistent from jump to jump,” Zimmerman said. “I do a lot more weight training this year. My sister isn’t into it yet, but she can be better if she works out. She has natural talent, good speed and her legs are as long as mine.”

Although Madeline did not qualify in the triple, she was leading until the final jump before being edged by Erica Wharton from Putnam Valley.
