Ossining Spartans Youth Swimmers Top Mount Vernon

OSSINING, N.Y. -- The Ossining Spartans Swim Team continued its successful winter season Friday, swimming past Mount Vernon’s smaller team in a Westchester-Fairfield Swim League (WFSL) meet hosted by the Spartans.

Thirty Spartans faced six Mount Vernon swimmers with a full observation deck of fans at the Joseph G. Caputo Community Center pool cheering them on. In a lopsided matchup, the Spartans swept first in all but three events.

Spartans Demi Bauer, Yohance Douglas, Yousef Kamal, Allison Hogan, Gavin De Maine, Katie Flynn, Thomas Overacker, Mollie De Maine, Nico San Martin and Brian Steinberg led a team sweep of all individual freestyle and backstroke events.

In the individual breaststroke events, Yousef Kamal, Sarah Kamal, Max Saich, Katie Flynn, Daniel Zhu and Mollie De Maine closed out Mt. Vernon in all but two age groupings. In the girls’ 8-and-under event, Deeya Patel finished second in 30:09, only 22 and 1/100ths of a second off first place.

Lilly Pawliczak, Yousef Kamal, Hailey Roksvold, Katie Flynn, Daniel Zhu and Adriana Pani took first in butterfly.

The meet ended with the most exciting race of the evening; the boys’ 100-meter butterfly. Spartan James Cevasco faced three Mount Vernon swimmers and swam neck and neck with a Mount Vernon swimmer until the last 15 meters of the race, when he pulled ahead and took first place in 1:45:60.

The Spartans will host their next WFSL league matchup against Harrison on Jan. 28.

Spartans Meet Time Standards for USA Swimming Meets

At a USA Swimming meet hosted by the Patriot’s Swim Team at the Lehman College pool in the Bronx on Saturday, the competitive core of the Spartans Swim Team matched its talent against some of the best competition in the Metropolitan region.

The 12-hour long meet tested several hundred swimmers from six Metro region USA Swimming teams, with some events running 10 heats deep. The goal of the individual Spartans was to meet time standards in specific events, which would enable those individuals to advance to Silver Championships, Junior Olympics, or Zone Qualification Championships (ZQ) to be held in March.

Sarah Kamal and Stella Meyerhoeffer made the cut for Silver Champs in the girls’ 10-and-under 200-yard individual medley, with finish times of 3:04:78 and 3:00:68, respectively. Sarah Kamal made the highest time standard for ZQ in the girls' 10-and-under 50 breaststroke with a finish of 40:60 seconds. Kamal also made the ZQ cut in the 100-yard breaststroke event and qualified to compete with other girls from Virginia to Maine in the Zone Championships.

In the 10-and-under girls’ 100 backstroke event, Sammy Novo and Emily Rocco qualified for Silver Champs with times of 1:28:77 and 1:30:12, respectively. In the girls' 10-and-under 100 butterfly, Emily Rocco and Sarah Kamal reached the Silver Champs time standard.

Speedy seven-year-old Yousef Kamal will compete at Silver Champs in the boys’ 10-and-under 100 butterfly by virtue of his lightning-fast finish of 1:37:75.

Nico San Martin qualified for Silver Champs in the boys’ 13-14 100 freestyle with a time of 59:34 and in the 14-and-under boys’ 500 freestyle, Nico San Martin met the Silver Champs time standard with a 5:40:44 finish.
