Breaking News: It's Time To 'Spring Forward,' But Potent Nor'easter Packed With Snow, Strong Winds Is Coming

Briarcliff's Young Defends Title In MGA Carter Cup

ELMSFORD, N.Y. – Briarcliff's Cameron Young, a Fordham Prep student and member of the Sleepy Hollow Golf Club, will defend his championship as he leads a talented group of golfers, including 12-year-old Solomon Thompson of Scarsdale, in Wednesday's opening round of the Metropolitan Golf Association's 10th Carter Cup junior stroke play golf tournament at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J.

Young, who is regarded at one of the top junior golfers in the area, hopes to become the first two-time champion of the event. The 15-year-old is having a breakout MGA season, having won the Hochster Invitational at Quaker Ridge, the Brae Burn Invitational and the Mittelmark Invitational at Fenway this summer.

Young competed in the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship in New Hampshire, advancing to the match play portion of the event, and also finished runner-up at the Westchester Amateur Championship at Rockrimmon Country Club in North Stamford, Conn., and placed second at the North & South Junior Championship at Pinehurst, N.C.

The Carter Cup is played in memory of Michael P. Carter, an accomplished junior golfer who was killed in a car accident in 2002 at age 20. Carter was junior club champion at both Baltusrol and Winged Foot Golf Club. He played for the Delbarton School golf team in Morristown, N.J., before joining the men’s team at Penn State University.

Thompson is the youngest player to qualify for the Carter Cup.
