The NYU senior and Briarcliff High School graduate has started the 2013-14 season with a 6-0 record, according to a press release from NYU. The record earned him New York University's Athlete of the Week Award.
Vastola, the captain of the team, earned his first award this season "on the strength of his undefeated performance at NYU's home-opener against Drew University and Stevens Institute of Technology" on Nov. 7 at the Coles Sports Center, according to the release.
"In the first match, Vastola went 3-0 and combined with his teammates to sweep Drew in foil 9-0," representatives said in the release. "Overall, the Violets won the match over the Rangers 23-4. Against Stevens, Vastola duplicated his earlier performance, once again going 3-0. However, that was not enough to fend off the Ducks, who edged the Violets 5-4 in foil and 14-13 overall."
