SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. A select group of middle school band and orchestra students will be getting out their instruments for a two-day festival of learning and enrichment this weekend. Students from Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow, Briarcliff Manor, Ossining and Croton are taking part in the fifth annual Rivertowns Music Festival. A free concert will be given at the Croton-Harmon High School Auditorium at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
The festival is designed for enrichment and to give students an opportunity to play outside their schools music rooms, Micah Sprague said, band director at Sleepy Hollow Middle-High School.
Sprague and Ossining arts coordinator Bradley Morrison, a Sleepy Hollow alumnus, started the festival in 2007 along with Pierre Van Cortland Middle School's Lisa Sable and Irvington Middle School Band Director Andrew Brunson. Although the festival was originally only for band, orchestra was added three years ago.
This year's festival features Brittney Trenczer, Sleepy Hollow Middle-High Schools chamber ensemble director, serving as the guest conductor for the orchestra.
The students will be learning and performing traditional music at a higher level because they are select students, Sprague said. Students will rehearse the music before Saturday's concert and spend some meeting other students during breaks.
Sprague said he hopes people will come out to Saturday's performance.
Please come to the concert and support some of Sleepy Hollows most accomplished music students, he said.
