Electricity, Magnetism Come To Life At Briarcliff Middle School

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. -- Briarcliff Middle School recently held its second annual Electricity and Magnetism Maker Faire, where sixth-graders used the two phenomena in their projects.

"We model our in-school experience after the maker movement,” said science teacher Julie Gallagher. “The students had an opportunity to make two out of four items related to electricity or magnetism. This culminating activity is done at the end of our unit so that the kids can apply some of what they have learned to real-life situations.”

In addition to creating an “Operation”-style game or a doodle-bot, the fair also gave students the new options to make sewable circuits or magnet men.

The Briarcliff PTA provided a $500 mini-grant to help supply some of the materials.

“We have around 20 parent volunteers who come in to facilitate this experience and make it possible,” said Gallagher.
