Briarcliff's Wendy Willner won the American Chemical Society Award for best chemistry project. Nicholas Poulton won third place in the molecular biology and medicine category.
Willner researched physical sciences, specifically how microbial fuel cells mimic bacteria to decrease the concentration of pollutants during energy production. Poulton studied the effects of Monoclanl antibodies, a new drug used to treat influenza. Willner and Poulton gave oral presentations on their research findings at the symposium held last week.
Briarcliff's Mark Moretto and Tyler Friedman placed in the top four in their categories. Moretto studied gas outbursts in the Jupitor-family comet Temple 1. Friedman studied the psychological effects and competitiveness associated with participating in fantasy football.
The New York State Junior Science and Humanities Symposium is a prestigious high school competition that focuses on science, technology, engineering and mathematics in education.
