A pair of New York actresses are appearing in a new Netflix series that’s quickly gaining favor with audiences.
“Nobody Wants This” – a romantic comedy starring Adam Brody, Kristen Bell, and Justine Lupe – premiered on the popular streaming service Thursday, Sept. 26.
It centers on the unexpected relationship between a rogue rabbi and an irascible, loud, agnostic woman, according to its IMDB synopsis.
Among those appearing on screen is Long Island native Jackie Tohn, an actress and musician who was born and raised in Oceanside. The 43-year-old portrays the character Esther.
Tohn said she loves the show and the people who brought it to life “so so much” in a post on Instagram. She shared several behind-the-scenes photos, including a few with Bell and Brody.
“It’s the kind of show where a camera operator can take a bagel and cream cheese to the torso in the middle of a take (slide 5),” she wrote.
Also starring in the show is Hudson Valley native Tovah Feldshuh, an actress, singer, and playwright originally from Scarsdale. The 75-year-old plays Bina, mother to Brody’s character.
“Nobody Wants This” boasts 94 percent positive reviews from critics on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.
The site’s consensus attributes much of the show’s adoration to Bell and Brody’s “irresistible chemistry and some thoughtful considerations of interfaith romance.”
Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, gave the show a score of 74 out of 100, indicating “generally favorable” reviews.
Tohn made her onscreen debut at the age of 10, appearing as an extra on the PBS children's series, "Ghostwriter." Her first credited role was on the CBS sitcom, "The Nanny," opposite Fran Drescher.
She is best known for playing Melanie "MelRose" Rosen on the Netflix series, "GLOW," and Courtenay Fortney in the Amazon Prime Video series, "The Boys" and "Gen V."
In 2009, Tohn competed in the eighth season of "American Idol," ultimately making it to the top 36 semifinals.
Feldshuh has appeared in dozens of film, TV, and stage productions since making her Broadway debut in the 1973 musical, "Cyrano."
Among her notable roles are Madame Z in 2006's "Just My Luck," and Mrs. Bubchik in 2006's "Lady in the Water."
Feldshuh's work has earned her four Tony Award nominations and two Emmy Award nominations for her roles in the NBC miniseries, "Holocaust" and "Law & Order."
