In 2007, Trump, who owns an estate in Bedford, spent $20,000 that belonged to the Donald J. Trump Foundation to purchase the painting by artist Michael Israel during a fundraiser auction at his Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida, said the Washington Post.
The Post reported the purchase in its Sunday edition. Since then, news outlets across the country have been looking for the location of the painting. The main reason for the hunt? If Trump did not give the painting to a charity, the Republican presidential candidate may have violated IRS rules against “self-dealing,” which prevents nonprofit leaders from spending money on themselves that is meant to benefit the charity, added the Washington Post.
On Wednesday, a former production manager for Israel told the Post that he had shipped the painting to Trump National Golf Club Westchester in Briarcliff Manor, at the request of Trump's wife, Melania, said the Post.
The Post attempted to contact the Trump campaign on Wednesday for confirmation, but did not get an immediate response. During a visit to the club, reporters were turned away, said the Post.
The artist who made the painting, also declined to comment, but in an earlier interview he had stated that he believed it went to one of golf courses, added the Post.
Following the event, a $20,000 check was sent to The Children's Place at Home Safe from the Donald J. Trump Foundation.
