Law enforcement agencies in Westchester are investigating a potential spoofing incident in North Castle.
New York State Police received multiple 9-1-1 emergency calls from a phone number (911-032-8500) - from a little girl who is reporting that her father has fallen and cannot get up. The trooper receiving the call said that the little girl would hang up before he could gather any information.
Investigators pinged the number, which led them to a Maple Avenue building in Armonk. Police said that they believe it to be a recurring spoofing incident. Officers were dispatched to the Maple Avenue building, which was secure and unoccupied.
“Spoofing” is when scammers hijack a local businesses' phone number and then calls residents attempting to obtain personal information or solicitations. The technique is used to entice people to answer their phones rather than let the unknown calls go to voicemail. The software and technology these scammers use are often difficult to track at the local level
The incident remains under investigation.
