Helena Kaushik, 69, Of Briarcliff Manor, Registered Nurse

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. - Helena Kaushik, a resident of Briarcliff Manor since 1981, died Saturday, Aug. 24. She was 69.

Kaushik was born July 22, 1944, in Detroit. Her grandparents had immigrated to Lowell, Mass., around 1870 and her father in 1911, both from Poland. She earned her MS in Nursing Administration and board certifications in geriatric and orthopedic nursing. As a caring, compassionate and professional R.N., she worked for several hospitals in Boston and New York. From 1970 to 1981, she worked at Deaconess Hospital, New England Baptist Hospital, and as Director of the Health Center at Babson College. From 1981 to 1991, she worked at Phelps Memorial Hospital and as a triage nurse at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx.

She was committed to women's empowerment through higher education. In 1999, a college for women in India was dedicated to her as the Mrs. Helena Kaushik Women's College. More than 1,300 women have graduated from the college since 2002.

A memorial dinner will be held Tuesday, Aug. 27 at the Royal Palace Restaurant in White Plains from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
