OSSINING, N.Y. An Ossining couple is ready to put on their sixth "Westchester Teen Idol" singing competition on Nov. 26 at the Irvington Town Hall Theater.
"We admire these young singers when they come in to compete and demonstrate their love for singing year after year. It's such an intense experience," said Carol Arrucci, who organizes the event along with her husband, Ray Arrucci.
Over 100 singers competed in September for the top 25 spots, the Arruccis said in a press release. The top contestant will win $500 in cash plus gift cards from Sam Ash music store in White Plains, Pocket Songs, a store in Elmsford that makes karaoke CDs, and various restaurants in Westchester. All runner ups and finalists will also receive gift cards, the Arruccis said.
"I am all about promoting young talent," said Carol Arrucci, who works for Main Street Arts, a youth theater organization in Bedford.
The Teen Idol competition will be judged by Broadway and Pop singers, including Robi Hagar, who sang in the rock musical Spring Awakening, and Craig Schulman, who sang in Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables.
"This competition helps the kids to focus on the 'total package,' because that is what they are being graded on," said Ray Arrucci, an actor who is currently acting in the Bedford Community Theater's production of Hairspray. "As actors, we are always looking to perform our songs with a great amount of vocal prowess and also have a strong commitment to the lyric as well."
The event will start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $25 and proceeds help fund productions by the Pleasantville Music Theater.
