MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. Republican and Conservative candidate for Westchester County Legislator, Michael Smith, is taking some vocal shots at his opponent early in the election process.
Smith released a statement earlier this week in which he criticized current District 3 legislator, Democrat John Nonna, and his budget override.
"Despite the warnings by County Executive Astorino and Legislative Minority Leader Jim Maisano back in December, John Nonna and the Democratic supermajority on the board put forward a fiscally irresponsible budget with phantom revenues that raided the county's reserve fund to help pay for tens of millions of dollars in added spending," said Smith in a statement.
Smith noted the negative outlook to the AAA bond rating by Moody's Investing Services and that the county of Westchester would be on fragile financial ground. According to Smith, Nonna's budget override could put taxpayers at risk.
Last December, Nonna voted with the Democratic majority on the board to override County Executive Rob Astorino's budget vetoes.
"Moody's warning is significant and cannot be ignored. At budget time last year, I warned the Board of Legislators that they were on shaky financial ground when they dipped into our reserve fund to restore spending cuts that I had proposed," said Astorino in a statement.
Smith will be facing up against Nonna in the upcoming election and their plans for taxes and county budgets will be heavily debated topic.
Legislator Nonna was unavailable to comment on the matter.
District-3 County Legislator encompasses Mount Pleasant, North Castle, Pleasantville, Sleepy Hollow, Briarcliff Manor and parts of Greenburgh.
