Rockland Veterans Light Watchfires Wednesday

IRVINGTON, N.Y. – Where there's smoke, there's remembrance.

Westchester residents may notice clouds of smoke and perhaps flames appearing on the Rockland County side of the Hudson River Wednesday.

Rockland County veterans are hosting the annual Watchfires Vigil at three different sites in the county: the Piermont Pier, Clausland Mountain and Eugene Levy Park.

Fires were lit at midnight and burned until dawn. They will be refueled and relit at dark, burning until midnight.

The Rockland County chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of American notes the fires date back to the Revolutionary War.

Fires are lit each May 30, the traditional Memorial Day. Rockland veterans have been building watchfires since 1987 according to the military regulations and specifications of the 18th century.
