Residents Resolve to Keep Healthy in the New Year

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – Eating healthier, not smoking and going back to school were some of the New Year's resolutions that local residents had at the end of 2011.

"My wife gave me a kidney nine years ago. It was a gift of life," said Rudy Masry, 72, of Briarcliff, as he shopped for vegetables at the A&P supermarket in the Chilmark shopping center. "For the New Year, I want to try and be healthier by watching what I eat, taking my medication, staying away from cholesterol and sugar and all that jazz."

Steven Fusco of Ossining said he started running 34 years ago and he wants to continue to run 2,000 miles per year and to ride his bike for more than 6,000 miles every year.

"I want to keep that up as long as I can," he said. "I'm 52 now so I've got to do it for another 50 years."

Debbie Mraz of Ossining does pilates on a regular basis and she said she wants to keep working out.

"Eat healthy and continue not smoking," she said.

Charles Talane of Ossining started his New Year's resolution a little before New Year's.

"I've been sort of on a healthy eating kick since the middle of December," he said. "I'm eating fresh and raw vegetables, fish, less red meat and processed and prepared food. I'd like to keep that up."

Zulma Rivera of Ossining who was in the pharmacy section of A&P said that for the moment she is trying to get rid of cold, but she'd also like to exercise more and pay more attention to nutrition.

Brittany Scheflen, a manager at the Postal Center in Briarcliff, said she is looking to lose 20 pounds and also to go back to school.

"I was in school this year but then I decided to take a couple of semesters off to make money," she said. "But I'd like to go back to study medical office management."
