GREENBURGH, N.Y. The highly-debated idea of turning the Tappan Zee Bridge into a park like the High Line in New York City will be spotlighted Wednesday night at the first organizational meeting of the group supporting the change of use for the aging structure.
The meeting begins at 8 p.m. Interested parties are invited to come to Town Hall for a conversation about the potential outcome and ramifications of developing the old Tappan Zee Bridge into a park.
The future Tappan Zee Bridge/High Line could have a walkway, bike path, benches, gardens, food stands, and entertainment during the summer. Many residents have expressed that it would be too costly to maintain a working high line, and that it is a waste of town resources to invest in the project. Other residents are attracted to the revenue and job opportunities that it could bring the town.
Fred Schaeffer, creator of the Walkway over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie, will be the guest speaker at the meeting to discuss the reality of turning the bridge into a park.
