POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. --A new Marist College/NY1 poll finds nearly half of residents who live near the Indian Point nuclear power plants in Buchanan oppose closing them.
49 percent of people questioned believe the plants should remain open while four in ten--or 40 percent-- favor shutting the facility down. 11 percent are unsure.
"After all these years, this remains a highly charged issue," said Dr. Lee M. Miringoff, Director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion. "Governor Cuomo still has some convincing to do." The Governor recently announced plans to ramp up efforts to get the power plants closed for good.
According to the Marist survey, the more people earned, the more likely they supported closing Indian Point.
Nearly six in ten residents in communities near the power plants who earn less than $50,000 annually--59 percent--said they support keeping Indian Point open. Only 43% of those earning more than $50,000 a year wanted the plants to remain oprational.
Overall, among registered voters, 55 percent of people questioned support nuclear power, 34 percent oppose it and 11 percent were unsure.
