THORNWOOD, N.Y. –- Police said they charged a Hastings man after an anonymous tipster called and said they recognized him as the armed gas station robber seen on a surveillance video released Wednesday.

Westchester County Police, along with investigators from the Mount Pleasant and Elmsford Police Departments, arrested John Allen, 40, of Hastings, early Thursday morning at a residence in Yonkers. Police said Allen was involved in the gas station armed robberies that took place in Thornwood and Elmsford on March 1.

Herb Haddad, a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney's Office in White Plains, said Allen is facing two counts of armed robbery charges and faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.  He will be arraigned on Monday morning in White Plains in front of Judge Lisa Margaret Smith.

Kieran O’Leary, a spokesperson for Westchester County Police, said the department received an anonymous tip from a caller around 8:30 p.m. who said they recognized Allen after watching the surveillance footage that was released Wednesday by police.  A red Jeep Liberty that fit the description in the incident was impounded at the scene of the arrest.
