POCANTICO HILLS, N.Y. - Although rain filled the skies outside, it couldn't stop the eighth grade students of The Pocantico Hills Central School from officially moving on to the high school level.
On Wednesday evening, 36 students in the class of 2011 received their diplomas as graduates of Pocantico Hill Central School in the 79th annual commencement ceremony.
Jacqueline Muniz, the student council vice president, addressed the gymnasium crowd with a speech focused on the memories made with the graduating class over the years.
"We are classmates, we are friends, we are brothers and sisters, we are the class of 2011," Muniz closed her graduation address.
Superintendent of the Pocantico Hills School District, Dr. Valencia Douglas, along with other members of the board of education, gave out 18 awards to various students. The awards and scholarships were given for accomplishments in academics, athletics, leadership and community service.
The Howard Ackley Award, selected by the faculty and awarded to the best overall student in all facets of student life was given to Olivia Segal. Segal was also given six other awards, including two for the highest grade point average in English and French, respectively.
The majority of the students will move on to Briarcliff High School in the fall. Others will head to Pleasantville High School, Maria Regina High School and Archbishop Stepinac High School.
