Grant Helps Transport Puppies to Briarcliff Shelter

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – Dozens of dogs and puppies were transported nearly 1,000 miles last week so they could find a home in Briarcliff Manor.

The SPCA of Westchester, a no-kill animal shelter located in Briarcliff Manor, received a grant of $10,000 from the ASPCA for its Adoption Program for Puppies and Young Adult Dogs, according to a press release. The grant helps fund the program that transports animals rescued from overpopulated South-east and Western shelters, said Robin Meng, SPCA of Westchester development manager.

“The money is specifically for the transport of these animals from the South,” Meng said. “It’s a huge help to us to bring animals from overcrowded kill shelters up here to our shelter. It’s a really great program and we’re really happy to have gotten this grant to keep it going.”

Shannon Laukuf, executive director of the SPCA, said in the press release that the program has saved the lives of many animals.

“The SPCA is very grateful to the ASPCA for their support of our rescue/transportation program which allows us to save the lives of healthy, adoptable puppies and young adult dogs who were slated for euthanasia in overcrowded Southern shelters,” Laukhuf said in the release. “Since 2007, the SPCA has worked with many Southern-based rescue groups to bring these companion animals to an area where they are given a chance to have a secure and happy life.”

The SPCA of Westchester was founded in 1883 by Ossining resident Mary Dusenberry “after she observed horses being mercilessly whipped and beaten as they trudged up nearby hills to deliver heavy burdens of coal,” according to the SPCA website. Originally affiliated with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the SPCA incorporated independently of the ASPCA in the early 1920s.

For more information on the program and those interested in adoption are asked to visit the SPCA of Westchester’s website at or by calling (914) 941-2896 ext.11.
