Club Fit Offering Showers For Those Without Power

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – For those still without power after the weekend snow storm, Club Fit is allowing anyone, including non-members, to use its showers, and the library is open for people who need to charge their cell phones or use the Internet.

"People can come at any time," said Ashlee Murphy, a receptionist for Club Fit located at 584 North State Rd. "Definitely a lot of people have been (using our showers). We did this during Hurricane Irene as well."

A Con Edison website said on Tuesday morning that 1,276 customers out of 2,964 total Briarcliff customers were still without power. The company estimated that power would be restored to customers by the end of the day on Wednesday.

"We got hit very hard, in some ways worse than (Hurricane) Irene," said Briarcliff village Manager Phil Zegarelli. "I think the devastation of the storm was made worse by the fact that most trees were not only full of leaves, but a lot of the trees were still fully green, so the leaves were not even loose. The heavy snow was like concrete adhering to the leaves and the weight was just too much and it broke the branches."

Areas still without power on Tuesday morning included a section near the Scarborough Presbyterian Church on Route 9, Pine Road, and the Rosecliff community, Zegarelli said. The central business district on Pleasantville Road is up and running again after being without power on Sunday and Monday.

To help people preserve food, Con Edison is distributing dry ice at BJ's in Yorktown, and Business Park Drive in Armonk.
