BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – The Briarcliff Daily Voice has been counting down to the new year by listing, in no particular order, the top stories from 2012. Here is the list:

  • Thousands of people in Briarcliff Manor lost power, roads were closed, streets flooded, and trees fell when Hurricane Sandy swept into the area in late October.
  • While there has been no connection made to a possible cancer cluster, the contaminated fields at Briarcliff Middle and High School are set to be cleaned up in 2013.
  • A Mamaroneck woman pleaded not guilty after being charged with second-degree murder in the death of her 4-year-old Briarcliff son, Jason "Jake" Reish.
  • The Archdiocese of New York listed St. Theresa School as "at-risk" for closing at the end of the school year.
  • The Consolidated Edison work stoppage in July affected Briarcliff Manor streetlights, as recently installed street lamps on North State Road remained without power for weeks.
  • Ossining’s Jane Shakman was killed in July when she was hit by a car in Briarcliff Manor. The 62-year-old was riding her bike along Chappaqua Road when she was hit by Briarcliff Manor resident Valerie Naber.
  • The Briarcliff school district eliminated 27 teacher aide positions in February and later hired teacher assistants to replace them. 
  • A fire destroyed a 500-foot maintenance garage in Briarcliff Manor in October. The building might have been saved if firefighters had been able to hook up to a hydrant that had been shut down in 2010.
  • The Briarcliff Manor Board of Education experienced major turnover, with board President Guy Rotondo and Trustee Eric Bashford not seeking re-election in May and Vice President Rosella Ranno resigning. Newcomers Dina Brantman and Michael Haberman ran uncontested to join the board, and Jonathan Satran was appointed later.
  • Briarcliff Manor volunteer firefighter John Mezzatesta, 38, died after losing his battle with cancer in March.
