Briarcliff Auditor Seeks Ossining Trustee Seat

Internal auditor Kim Izzarelli of Briarcliff announced last week that she plans to run for an open Town of Ossining trustee seat in November.

"I've done a lot for Ossining and it was just sort of a natural progression of things for me to run for trustee," Izzarelli said. "I thought given my background in auditing and finance, you really need people with strong financial backgrounds to oversee things and I just think I have a lot to contribute."

Izzarelli, a Republican who plans to run on the Republican line, said she would like to see more efficient and effective government. Having grown in up Connecticut where there is no county-level government, she said she knows that government can be more simple and effective.

"They don't have as many of these special tax districts there. Everything is more aligned around towns," she said.

Izzarelli lives in a part of Briarcliff that is in the unincorporated part of the Town of Ossining. She ran for a Briarcliff trustee seat in 2007 and lost.

Izzarelli said she appreciates how much effort is being put in to study the possible annexation of Town of Ossining election districts 17 and 20 by the village of Briarcliff. She does not live in those two districts.

"To get true numbers is going to require a lot of work. I'm an auditor so I know how it works. It's in the very preliminary stages," she said.

Izzarelli preferred not to give out the name of her employer.

Aside from promoting more efficient government, Izarelli is also in favor of eliminating health insurance benefits for the town board.

"It's a generous benefit for what should be a part-time job," she said. "Most part-time jobs in the private sector do not come with health insurance... I think there's a danger that when you offer something that generous, there's a possibility you can't get (board members) to leave because the benefits are too generous."
