BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. Construction is under way at Briarcliff Manors first affordable-housing project and officials say the early start could mean completion in less than a year.
The Braircliff Manor Board of Trustees recently completed a deal on the affordable-housing development in the area of 445 N. State Road. The Westchester County Board of Legislators authorized the purchase, signed an agreement with the village and authorized $1.5 million to purchase the property in March. The property is set for 14 two-bedroom units of affordable housing for eligible families with incomes below 80 percent of the countys median income.
Original estimates had the project completion near the beginning of 2014, but Village Manager Philip Zegarelli said it is possible that people could already be living there before next year is out.
I dont want to say its on the fast track but they we were ready to go so were making hay while the sun shines, Zegarelli said. Bottom line is that late-2013 is a really good target date at this point.
The Village of Briarcliff Manor was more than willing to get the ball rolling on affordable housing, Zegarelli said.
This is being done by the mayor and board in recognition of everyone doing their part on affordable housing, he said. We havent seen any directives to get this done at this point so what were saying is that in doing this, Briarcliff is recognized for taking initiative while the village has the ability to help direct this.
The early start to the project is also receiving praise from Westchester County officials.
This is a really great project because its combining office space with affordable housing, said Norma Drummond of the Westchester County Planning Department. Were excited that this is one of our first developments in an office park. And because land is so expensive in Briarcliff, finding a site where were able to get this many units is a really great opportunity for us.
