BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. Two Briarcliff Manor boys aged 15 and 16 have been charged with felony vandalism after they allegedly marked up setting concrete in the repairs on North State Road.
An officer with the Briarcliff Manor Police Department confirmed Thursday that two youths were arrested. The officer also confirmed that the two are Briarcliff Manor residents. The newly placed sidewalk now has dozens of shoeprints that dried with the concrete. Briarcliff Village Manager Philip Zegarelli said that roughly $20,000 in damage was caused to the sidewalk, which was being funded through the village.
Well have to remove about 70 percent of it because its too far damaged, he said. We will seek full restitution by those who are accused of doing it. But in the meantime were moving ahead.
Zegarelli added that he was upset to find out the work had been damaged.
It really hurts to see this, he said. The village is not going to sit by and say, Well, kids will be kids. Thats not the case. Weve had signs stolen and other vandalism, but this is beyond that.
Zegarelli couldnt estimate how long it would take for the repairs to be completed.
Theyre not going to start breaking it out until next week, he said. Hopefully, it will be sooner than later, but a lot of work needs to be done.
The road was closed in August after a sinkhole developed during Hurricane Irene. It reopened for about a month in October, according to earlier reports, then closed again when permanent repairs funded by FEMA began. Zegarelli said in December it was originally believed that the sinkhole was a result of the storm, but it could also have been caused by what he referred to as mismatched construction.
