Fujifilm Brings Conservation to Westchester Parks

A dozen electric golf carts will officially become part of the Westchester Parks Department this month, as FUJIFILM Holdings America Corporation helps work toward environmental improvements in its community. Girish Menon, director of environment health and safety for FUJIFILM Holdings America Corporation, says his company was one of the first corporations to invest in the parks program in the Westchester area. The parks include: Playland Park in Rye, Muscoot Farm in Somers, Croton Point Park in Croton-on-Hudson, Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers and Glen Island Park in New Rochelle.

Menon, who has been a board member of Friends of Westchester County Parks for a year, says it was natural for Fujifilm to adopt Kensico Plaza as its initial park to support a decade ago. The park and Fujifilm are neighbors in Valhalla.

The golf cart fleet, which includes five zero-emission vehicles, provides convenient transportation for park employees on parks grounds. Menon says the carts reduce carbon emissions as well as noise. The carts replace gas-powered vehicles, lowering the county's consumption of that combustible as well.

A resident of Briarcliff Manor, Menon says his job at Fujifilm and his family's enjoyment of Westchester parks give him the perfect background to serve on the Friends board. He, wife Raji and sons Jai, 14, and Neel, 7, enjoy parks throughout the county. “My kids learned to bike at Kensico Dam Plaza. We love going to Cranberry Lake Preserve and Croton Point Park,” Menon says.

Menon is proud of Fujifilm’s commitment to the community and environment. He says it goes far beyond large projects such as the golf carts. With its concern for the environment dating to the 1980s, Fujifilm has included its entire Valhalla office in caring for the local community for a decade with annual Employee Volunteer Days. This year, Menon will participate Sept. 13 at Kensico Dam with many from the Valhalla Fujifilm offices doing basic maintenance for the park. Pointing to the cherry blossoms at the foot of the dam as an earlier Fujifilm project, he says, “We usually have a great turnout. … We try to participate and be part of these types of projects in all the communities where we operate.”
