Erin Bloom will be running in the 14th annual Boston Half Marathon, presented by the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund on Oct. 12.
More than 570 teams participate in the race, raising at least $750 to support adult and pediatric cancer care and patient research at Dana-Farber. Runners have raised more than $4 million and more than 8,000 people participate in the event.
Bloom said she is running with her friends in honor of her friend's mom who passed away from pancreatic cancer.
"We're all getting together for her," Bloom said. "It's an event that's near and dear to my heart. Whatever we can do to help."
Bloom's team, Running For Reg, has already raised more than $40,000.
Bloom started running two years ago, and has also run the New York City Half Marathon.
"I like having a goal and something to run for," Bloom, who trains a few times a week, said. "We like to train in Central Park."
Running the half marathon will be challenging and difficult, especially since Bloom has never ran the course, but she is confident she will do well.
"It's an attainable goal," Bloom said. "I know I can do this."
Bloom said she plans to run the Sleepy Hollow Halloween 10K on Saturday, Oct. 18, in honor of someone who has brain cancer.
"I really enjoy running for a good cause," Bloom said. "You're doing something that's active and staying healthy."
