BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. The Girl Scouts of the United States of America was around for 92 years before Briarcliff Manor Scout Kelly Friedel was born.
For Kelly, being part of the 100-year anniversary ceremony Monday night at Briarcliff Manors Law Memorial Park could be described in one word Incredible.
I love getting to hang out with my friends that I never really get to see because were in different classes. But you get to do things to help people too, Kelly said. Its really great.
Hundreds of members of the Girl Scouts of the USA participated in ceremonies around the country Monday night to honor the organizations 100th birthday. On March 12, 1912, Juliette Gordon Low officially created the Girl Scouts of the United States of America. Membership has grown every year since, and now more than 2.3 million girls and hundreds of thousands of adults are involved in Girl Scouting, according to girlscouts.org. In Briarcliff Manor, dozens of Girl Scouts and past members joined in the celebration Monday night.
Briarcliff Manor Troop 2005 Leader Jill Hertz said she was honored to be a part of the ceremony Monday night, having joined the Girl Scouts herself in 1975.
Its kind of like reliving what I did and being a part of the community and growing together, Hertz said, adding that she started in Girl Scouts in North Carolina. My mother was a troop leader, too, and I just loved being a part of the community and helping out. And I remember how much I loved it, so I wanted to do the same thing for my daughter.
While the uniforms, activities and even the badges have changed over the years, Hertz said a few things have stayed the same.
Its always been about bringing girls together and doing things to help out their community, she said. Its a really wonderful thing to be a part of.
Regina Leon, Briarcliff Pocantico Service Unit co-manager, said she was pleased with the turnout Monday night.
Were lucky to have so many people involved in this who are dedicated to making Girl Scouts great, Leon said. What we wanted to do is get everyone together and remind ourselves of the meaning of Scouting and really rededicate ourselves to Scouting. The community has done a great job of that tonight.
