Dog From Eurasia Named SPCA Of Westchester's Pet Of The Week

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – The SPCA of Westchester has named its Pet of the Week, an animal with a story different from others in the region.

Elowyn is a 2-year-old golden retriever/Bassett hound mix brought to Westchester from Eurasia.

According to a release from the no-kill animal shelter, Elowyn was saved from Turkey, where many dogs are left to live on the streets and in the woods.

Born with a full golden retriever coat and face and short legs like a Bassett hound, Elowyn is “quite a mix,” according to the shelter.

The dog is said to be sweet and shy, but will open up quickly to new people, according to the shelter, which said she was taken in as a stray in Turkey, spayed and tagged and released back into the streets.

A good Samaritan who feeds stray dogs eventually recognized Elowyn’s sweet demeanor, took her in and shipped her to the United States for adoption, according to the shelter.

Elowyn does well with other dogs, but would prefer a home where she is the only pet, according to the shelter, which said that such a home would help build her confidence.

A home without young children would probably be best, the shelter said.

To schedule an appointment to meet Elowyn or any other the other animals up for adoption at the SPCA of Westchester, visit the shelter’s website or Facebook page .
