Briarcliff Doctor Hosts Stress Workshop Wednesday

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – It’s not about getting rid of stress, it’s about handling it, says Briarcliff Manor’s Dr. Steven Goodstein.

Goodstein, a local nutritionist and chiropractor, is scheduled to host a series of three wellness talks at the Briarcliff Manor Public Library. The first session, known as the Health and Stress Workshop, starts at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the library. The lecture is designed to educate residents on the symptoms of stress, how stress affects the body’s overall health and what a person can do to relieve stress both at work and at home. Goodstein is giving the presentation as a volunteer for the Foundation for Wellness Professionals.

“My whole approach is a non-drug related approach to healthcare and the idea is to get people thinking outside of the box on medicine,” Goodstein said. “Stress can lead to serious health complications if it’s not addressed properly. The idea behind the workshop is to get people reacting differently to the stressors in their lives.”

Goodstein said there are “hundreds of causes for stress” but the workshop doesn’t focus on the cause – it focuses on the possible solutions to handle it better.

“I can’t say there’s any less stress from someone who has to get on the 6 a.m. train to Wall Street every morning or a mom who has kids to take care of and maybe even a job on top of that,” Goodstein said. “Our stresses are all different. But what’s the same amongst all of us is how it affects our bodies. Whatever the stressor, we respond physiologically in the same ways.”

The workshop doesn’t attempt to eliminate stress either, Goodstein said.

“The slings and arrows are always going to be there and anything that tells you you’re going to get rid of stress isn’t telling you the truth,” Goodstein said.

Reference Librarian Shelley Glick, who helped set up the workshops at the library, said the sessions are designed to address as many people in the Briarcliff Manor community as possible.

“Who doesn’t deal with stress every day? I think we all try to deal with it in our own ways but we don’t know a lot about how to really handle it,” Glick said.

Registration for all sessions is required, Glick said. Residents can register for the event by contacting Glick at 941-7072 or at sglick@wlsmail.org. Information on Goodstein is available through his website and through the Foundation for Wellness Professionals.
