Three high school students from Northern Westchester have earned national recognition for their above-average achievements, district officials announced. Half a dozen high school seniors from Northern Westchester have been selected as finalists in a prestigious national program. Six seniors from Byram Hills High School in Armonk have been named as finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program, the Byram Hills Central School District announced on Thursday, Feb. 15. About 100 Afghan Students To Attend College In Hudson Valley
About 100 students are set to relocate from Afghanistan to continue their studies at a Hudson Valley college. Bard College, located in Dutchess County, announced plans to accept nearly 100 students from the American University of Afghanistan in Kabul at its Annandale, Simon's Rock and Berlin campuses. The college said 70 students were accepted to the Annandale and Simon's Rock campuses so far. Five students have arrived, and more students are set to arrive in mid-January. Iona College Issues Lifeline To Students Following CNR Closing Announcement
Iona College is offering a lifeline to some students at the College of New Rochelle following last week’s announcement that the institution is likely to close at the end of the summer semester as they contend with a financial crisis. In 2016, the college’s Board of Trustees was alerted about “significant unmet financial obligations that had accrued over a period of time.” The Board subsequently launched an investigation and enlisted the help of officials to restructure and manage CNR’s finances. Former Westchester Community College President Joseph Hankin Dies
Former Westchester Community College President Joseph N. Hankin, who was one of the nation’s longest-serving community college presidents has died at the age of 78. The college announced Thursday, Jan. 17 that Hankin died on Wednesday, Jan. 16. He first took over at the college in 1971 and served 42 years at the helm until his retirement in 2013. Hankin was a significant member of the team that expanded the Westchester Community College Foundation, which has raised substantial resources in support of faculty and staff. Bowl For College Scholarships: Byron Womack Fundraiser This Weekend
Friends, students and teaching associates of Byron Womack, a very popular assistant principal at Port Chester Middle School, have organized a singles bowling tournament in his memory. Womack was found dead on Feb. 20 at the age of 48 of natural causes. All proceeds from the bowling tournament will go to the Byron Womack Scholarship Fund.
