Triathlon Raises $80,000 for Leukemia, Lymphoma

Dana Johnston was six years old when she was diagnosed with leukemia. More than 10 years later, she’s cancer-free, thanks partly to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

On Sunday, Johnston spoke in support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as part of the 3rd Annual Sleepy Hollow Sprint Triathlon. The Triathlon raised approximately $80,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

“Because of you, the money you raised and your support, you’ve made it possible for a parent to play catch with their child, to watch them graduate from high school and college, and most importantly, to achieve their dreams,” she said.

A crowd gathered early in the morning at Kingsland Point Park to cheer on their family and friends as they swam, biked and ran their way through a 13.5-mile course in Sleepy Hollow. Some brought signs, but cameras were a more common sight as supporters captured the race for posterity.

The triathlon started near the Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse, with participants wading into the Hudson River for the swimming portion. Race officials counted down from 10, and groups of swimmers dove headfirst into the competition in waves based on their assigned colors.

After swimming on the preset course, participants then climbed out from the water, took off their wetsuits and hopped on bikes. Bikers traversed 10 miles through Sleepy Hollow along Route 9 and 117, making a round trip back to Kingsland Point Park where they exchanged their bikes for a pair of running shoes.

The run lasted three miles, and participants traveled up and down Beekman Avenue before coming across the finish line to cheers and a row of cameras. Once done, they received green medals signifying they had completed the race.

Bronxville resident Joseph Gravier, 42, took first place overall in the men’s division with a time of 1 hour, 1 minute, 16 seconds. Matthew Arnold, 38, of New York City, took second place in the men’s division with a time of 1 hour, 1 minute, 55 seconds. Third place went to Douglas Sawyer, 44, from Tarrytown with a time of 1 hour, 2 minutes, 28 seconds.

In the women’s division, Kristina Dorfman, 36, from Rye took first place with a time of 1 hour, 5 minutes, 36 seconds. Deirdre Dilworth, 37, from White Plains received second place with her time of 1 hour, 7 minutes, 24 seconds. Third Place went to Emily Willhoft, 21, from Pound Ridge with a time of 1 hour, 11 minutes, 9 seconds.

Uomo Cycling (Courtney Callahan, Jay Duggan and Joe Praino) took first place in the teams division with a time of 55 minutes, 33 seconds. Uomo Cycling 2 took second place with a time of 58 minutes, 10 seconds. Third place went to team Princess, who had a time of 1 hour, 1 minute, 10 seconds.

Dilworth, who is training for a half-Iron Man marathon in July, said she thought the race course was great because it had a mixture of hills and flat areas. This was her third time at the Triathlon, and some of her relatives from Upstate came to see her participate.

“For me, the most challenging part is always the bike,” she said. “It’s just my weakest sport.”

Brian Miles, 50, from North Salem has also been participating in the Triathlon since its inception. Because his weakest section is always running, he looks forward to getting it over with as quick as possible.

“I’m always looking for the finish line,” he said.

Before the results were announced, Miles felt he finished fairly strong.

“I think I did well for myself,” he said. “It’s hard to figure, you know, with all the waves where you’re going to finish.”

Miles ended up taking first place in the Men’s Age 50-54 division.
