WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Fox Lane and Mahopac were engaged in a close game late in a Section 1 Class AA Boys Basketball Championship semifinal at the Westchester County Center.
The Foxes pulled to within three points with two minutes remaining, when Mahopacs Brendan Hynes single-handedly ended Fox Lanes season.
The forward scored seven points in the final 1:58, sending third-seeded Mahopac to a 48-41 win over second-seeded Fox Lane.
Mahopac advances to the Section 1 Class AA Championship game against top-seeded Mount Vernon on Sunday at noon. The Indians are making their first title-game appearance since 1986, when they lost to Mount Vernon.
Dylan Peretz and Carlito Carvalho led the Foxes with 12 points apiece.
Fox Lane trailed by three, 39-36, when Hynes grabbed an offensive rebound and put in a reverse layup with 1:58 on the clock. After a Kevin Muller follow for Fox Lane, 27 seconds later, Hynes snared another offensive rebound and laid the ball in with 1:06 remaining, giving Mahopac a 43-38 lead.
Hynes scored nine of his game-high 15 points in the fourth quarter. He was the only Mahopac player in double figures.
Carvalho netted 10 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter, including a three-point play, on a driving, spinning layup and a steal, which he finished with a shot off the glass, giving Fox Lane a brief, 36-34 lead. On Mahopacs ensuing possession, Dan Neilis scored his only points of the game, a trey from the left win with 3:35 left.
