Local Wrestlers in NCAA Wrestling Championships

Former Section 1 wrestling standouts will be on display Friday and Saturday at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Springfield College’s Joey Grippi (Fox Lane) and Derrick Longo (Ardsley), Johns Hopkins’ Henry Stauber (John Jay-Cross River) and Oneonta State’s Joe Hauser (Lakeland) will be competing.

Grippi, who won the New England Wrestling Association 133-pound title, is seeded sixth and will face Dan Herr from the College of New Jersey in a first-round match. This is Grippi’s third consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship. Grippi is ranked eighth at 133 in the Brute National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll.

Longo, ranked ninth at 165 in the Brute National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll, won the NEWA 165-pound championship and is seeded fifth. Longo has Matt Burns of Augustana (Il.) in the first round.

Stauber was the Centennial Conference 149-pound titlist. He drew fifth-seeded James Locke of Coe College in the first round.

Hauser was a 149-pound finalist in the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championships. On the strength of a 25-7 record and second-place finish, Hauser received a wild card. He meets third-seeded Zac Andrews of Delaware Valley in a first-round match.
