Katonah Swim Team Enjoys County Championships

BEDFORD, N.Y. – Swimmers from the Katonah Swim and Dive Team descended on the pool at Playland Amusement Park in Rye on Wednesday for day three of the 87th annual Westchester County Swimming Association Championships.

Club teams from throughout the county gathered for the four-day event, which runs through Thursday. Katonah sent 15 swimmers to the event.

Second-year head coach Erin Knapp has experienced the county championships both as a swimmer and a coach and has the perspective that comes with each of those positions.

“It’s really exciting as a swimmer. I think it’s a great time," Knapp said. "It’s a really cool meet for summer because it’s different from anything else. As a coach, it’s more … to support my swimmers as opposed to getting really psyched up and everything.”

Knapp, like many other coaches and swimmers at the championships, said her swimmers enjoy the opportunity to loosen up and relax.

“Especially with the special days and everything, like the Hawaiian day and the Red, White and Blue day,” Knapp said. “It’s kind of cool just for them to come and show off what they’ve practiced all summer.”

Wednesday was “Red, White and Blue Day,”  and swimmers, coaches and fans dressed up in colorful outfits and painted their faces and hair in patriotic colors.

Thirteen-year-old swimmer Kerry Kelly has competed at the counties championships since she was 8 and said the fun atmosphere of the event keeps her coming back for more.

Kelly swims at Empire Swim School in Tarrytown and said the event gives her a chance to connect with her teammates at other clubs.

“The whole team is divided, so it’s fun to hang out with them,” Kelly said.
