Fox Lane Stays Undefeated Against Harrison

HARRISON, N.Y. – Fox Lane boys’ swimming coach Carolyn Johnson has led her team to an undefeated season so far this year, and the depth of her roster has plenty to do with that.

“I think that’s the philosophy of most,” Johnson said. “It’s depth that wins meets.”

Fox Lane (4-0) handed Harrison (3-1) its first loss of the season, 55-39, on Thursday at Louis M. Klein Middle School.

The Foxes earned crucial points in the 200 yard individual medley, in which Fox Lane finished first and second. Johnson said she counted on star swimmer Will Rappaport, who finished third in the state at the 200 meter individual medley last year, to finish first in Thursday’s race.

She did not, however, necessarily expect her team to claim the top two spots.

“That really surprised me because I thought (Harrison coach Phill Dearstyne) would put his better swimmers in there,” Johnson said.

Dearstyne said he maps out his desired results on a scoring chart prior to each meet, and he knew his team needed to finish at least in second and third in the relays.

In a four-lane race, first place earns four points, second place earns three and third place earns one. So a second and third place finish for one team cancels out the four points earned by the opponent.

Harrison dropped its first meet of the year to a team with more than double its number of swimmers.

“We’re a team of 12 and they’re a team of 29,” Dearstyne said. “We can’t really complain.”

Johnson said she knew the breaststroke would be a difficult event for her team, but she compensated in later events and earned the win.

“I just saved everything for the final relay,” Johnson said.
