BEDFORD, N.Y. - Fox Lane wasted little time establishing itself in a Section 1 Class B girls lacrosse championship semifinal with Scarsdale on Tuesday.
The top-seeded Foxes scored three goals in the first one minute and 57 seconds en route to a 17-6 victory over the fourth-seeded Raiders.
Fox Lane advances to its third consecutive Class B championship game. The Foxes will play third-seeded Brewster, which eliminated defending champion Yorktown, in the title game a7 7 p.m. on Thursday at Fox Lane High School. Brewster defeated Fox Lane, 7-6, on April 11.
When we lost to Brewster, we were still a new team, said senior Sammy Jo Tracy, who scored five goals and added three assists. Were more together as a team now. We have all of our girls back, and everyone has improved tremendously. Its going to be a great game and were all very excited.
Tracy, who has 73 goals, is hoping Fox Lane has a repeat of the 2010 season, with a different conclusion -- when the Foxes won the Section 1 Class B title and went to the state championship. However, Garden City denied Fox Lane a state title.
Tracy was instrumental in helping Fox Lane take another major step toward its goal of a state championship. The North Carolina-bound Tracy opened the scoring 16 seconds into the game, and netted her second at the 1:57 mark. Both goals were a result of Tracy winning the face-off, then racing down the field.
We knew Scarsdale was a very good team and this was going to be a tough game, so we came in wanting to push our fast break, Tracy said.
The Foxes raced out to a 10-4 lead at halftime as Tracy had four goals and Lexi Cannon scored three of her five goals in the first half.
Fox Lanes defense had a solid game, holding the high-powered Raiders offense to six goals, their lowest output of the season. Five of the six goals came on eight-meter shots. Fox Lane held Lindsay Repp, who came with 78 goals, to one goal.
Our defense was well-prepared, Tracy said. Coach did a good job of scouting them. We were sliding well and double-teaming well.
Liz Felix led Scarsdale with a hat trick.
