Fox Lane is now 7-0 and will look to conclude a perfect regular season Thursday when it faces rival Horace Greeley at SUNY-Purchase.
“We did very well last year, but we felt that last year we were not as good as we are this year,” said sophomore Robby Purvis, a double winner Friday. “We’ve really stepped up as a team this year. I think this is the longest we have ever gone undefeated. This was a tough meet, and we have one more tough one.”
The Foxes graduated a talented senior class, Purvis said, but the freshmen and eighth-graders have contributed to the team’s success. That, plus the returning swimmers have all improved.
“We feel we have so much more depth this year,” he said. “Our swimmers who were getting fifth and sixth places last year are getting second and third places this year.”
Purvis credited senior captains Ian Kleinsmith, Scott May and Chris Cerutti for bringing the team together and, more important, working with the younger swimmers in their transition to varsity.
He won the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2 minutes, 4.8 seconds, then led a Fox Lane clean sweep in the 100-yard butterfly. Purvis covered the 100 yards in 56.89 seconds, followed by Luca DiCapua in second (1:00.10) and Travis May in third (1:00.92). Cerutti won the 100-yard backstroke, and the Foxes prevailed in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays.
“Ian pulled our relays together and helped us win them, and Travis really stepped it up for us in the sprints,” Purvis said.
