Scott Persampieri, the assistant superintendent for human resources, said he’s interviewed two search firms and will bring one to the Board of Education this month for approval.
“We want to have a candidate [for principal] before the board by next March or April,” Persampieri said. “We want to be out in front on this and be one of the first districts to fill an important position like this. We are on a quick time line. Any later than that and we will lose candidates.”
Currently, the high school is being run by interim principal John Goetz, who was hired this past summer to replace Ellen Doherty. Doherty announced her resignation in the spring, citing personal reasons. She had been John Jay’s principal since April 2008.
Superintendent Paul Kreutzer said he had anticipated that the administration would present candidates to the board at an earlier date, but deferred to Persampieri’s projections.
“I told [faculty] I’d like to give them a Valentine’s Day gift and have someone signed and sealed by then, but Scott [Persampieri] is probably being more realistic," Kreutzer said.
Persampieiri said that once a search firm has lined up candidates, the selection will be “an extremely inclusive process” involving several groups throughout the district.
“First, the goal of the firm is to get [the candidates] to understand what our vision for the district is,” he said. “We will then have groups of community members, including teachers at the high school, parents and students, involved in the hiring process.”
“We want to give a lot of deference to the people who will be working most closely with this individual,” Kreutzer added.
Persampieri said the search for the new principal will be nationwide.
“We have a good salary structure, so we will find a good fit,” he said.
