Principal Profile: Mt Kisco's Sue Ostrofsky

Mount Kisco, NY--It only takes a half of a second to realize that Sue Ostrofsky, principal at Mount Kisco Elementary, loves her job.

Bursting through her school’s main office door with the energy of a tornado, she greets her co-workers with an enthusiastic hello, ready to start another productive and significant day for nearly 600 students.

Ostrofsky, in her eighth year at the helm of the school, cannot picture herself in a better situation.

“There hasn’t been one day I haven’t been excited to come to work,” she said. “When I came on board, I came into a fantastic school community, and we looked at what we valued and what we wanted for our children.”

It was easy to feel intimidated by her transition to principal eight years ago, as the school cycled through six principals in six years before she stepped in.

“It was hard. The staff was trying to work with each one, interims and not…but it’s a matching game,” Ostrofsky said. “Some of these former principals are very successful in their new districts, but it’s all about a match.”

The match was made in heaven for Ostrofsky, who has seen the school grow from 290 students to near 600 today. Much of the growth was in accordance with bringing a more diverse community into the school, which Ostrofsky considers vital.

“We’re more diverse, which is wonderful because it makes the school richer for that. Many second language learners, and through that learning, you become a stronger community,” Ostrofsky said.

For those who hope she will continue to keep the school strong, she urges that it is the school itself that is learning how to run smoothly on its own, with or without a leader at its head.

“I had a family emergency and I had to be out of the building for over a week, and that is huge since I never miss a day,” she explained. “But my building ran so beautifully, there wasn’t even a bump. It speaks volumes of the people in this school, and the entire school community.”
