To the Editor:
Albert Einstein once famously said, “insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
On Tuesday, May 17, I urge you to help stop the insanity and please vote for Mike Solomon, Michelle Brooks and Pam Harney.
Our kids and their parents cannot afford another six years of program cuts, six years of unbalanced budgets and six years of higher taxes.
After spending the last eight years and more than 100 hours in BCSD Budget Advisory Committee meetings, I am hopeful this election will bring about the changes finally needed to address BCSD’s structural deficits.
Mike Solomon was first elected three years ago to the Board of Education. His lifelong career in public finance was a welcome addition to the board.
Solomon's mantra the past three years has been the very simple fundamental belief that “expenses cannot exceed revenue.”
We can all agree at more than $29,417 spent per pupil, we don’t have a revenue problem. We have an expense problem.
Specifically, we have an expense growth problem.
For two years, Solomon was a lone voice on the board.
Last year, the belief in balancing educational priorities with fiscal realities was strengthened with the election of Colette Dow and Brian Sheerin.
However, they are only three voices on a board of seven.
Every student in BCSD deserves the best education possible.
They will not receive that if we continue to cut programs and teachers.
The only way to end these cuts is to have expense growth — salary and health care — linked directly to rate of the tax cap.
Please vote for Solomon, Brooks and Harney Tuesday, May 17 and help stop the insanity.
They are parents of nine current BCSD students.
Not only will they work to preserve the quality of the education for their nine children in Bedford Central Schools, they also will work for the other 4,368 students and their parents.
